But please keep in mind that I am from NJIT and I want this post to be more useful to students coming to NJIT. I also am from the CS department, I have no clue of how to deal with other departments. So if you can see that this post may be useful to you, you may use it.

If you are going to a "good" school, believe me, except for the fee, NJIT is better than most "good" schools for a few reasons:

1) NJIT is the neighbor of the financial hub of the world
2) It belongs to the tri-state area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-State_Region)
3) Most financial employers come to NJIT for on-campus recruitments. Ask you friends, seniors who go to those "good" schools and what companies come for on campus recruitment.
4) Life is hard. Why this is good? You become experienced to different aspects of life and learn to live stronger. Most schools don't offer this ;)
5) NJ is full of desis. Believe me, xenomania is not good. We are Indians and lets live with some. In NJ, you can find many many Indians and hence you can feel at home.
People in other states die to go to get stuff from an Indian grocery store. Here we have grocery stores everywhere! There is actually a street nick-named "Indian Street" in Jersey City because all shops in it are Indian! If you are from Hyderabad, and been to Abids/Koti, you will know what I mean.
6) For people who have Xenomania, go to NYC (30 mins on train, ticket is 1.50 which is dead cheap here). you will get to see people from all over the world, except that you cannot distinguish. All those white people look alike! Anyway, you can slowly differentiate nonetheless.
7) People coming to NJIT, you will love this place. You can feel happy saying we are locals of NYC!
8) Only bad thing is that you have to be careful. I have been here for 1 yr and I have heard of some 6-8 mugging incidents. But thats alright, just give them what you have and you should be fine. Its always best to have very little amounts in your pocket. You won't need money when going to school.

Job opportunities differ from school to school. There are few tradeoffs you have to make before coming here:
1) You want to do Masters - that's it. After that, go back home. This is very rare. In such cases, you want to pay as much fee by yourself as possible.
2) You ultimately want a good job at a good place. For this option, you have to consider few more things. Which field you are in? Which place has the most jobs for your field? Is there a school famous/good/popular for that field.
3) You have a low GRE score and have very less options.

In the first case, it doesn't matter which school you go for. Any school is fine. Believe me, if you are not in the top schools (say top 50), it doesn't matter. The other schools are all the same. So, don't worry about the school. Just see if you have funding or not. How the on campus job opportunities are etc. So, for average GRE scores say 1000-1300 or so, you should be worrying about funding. Scores above 1300 in most of the cases, are clever people, and manage to get funding. Anyway, I don't care about them. So, go to a school which offers you a GA, TA, or RA position. If you think you should go to a better school than the one which is offering you the Assistantship position, you will be, in most cases, doomed! SCHOOL JUST DOESN'T MATTER UNLESS THEY HAVE FUNDING. If the school has funding it implies that they will have good TA positions. If departments internally have funding, they have good GA positions. If the professors have funding, they have RA positions. If you get any of these 3 positions, a part/all the fee will be waived. This, is the best option you can get and you cannot ask for more than this. GA/RA/TA positions mostly ask you to do a thesis under the professor you are working or in the department you are working. This is not a big deal and is very good if you can do it.
What do these positions pay?
GA positions can pay on an hourly basis or a particular amount monthly. They can pay anywhere between 15-30 dollars an hour or 1000-1500 a month. You can work for 20 hours on any job when you are taking 9 credits (usually 3 courses).
TA positions are paid by the school or by the professor under whom you are doing the TA position. If a school has many PhDs, most of these positions go to the PhD students. In most cases, the fee gets waived.
RA positions are entirely based on the professor. They pay anywhere between 1200-2000 and the entire fee gets waived in most cases. RA positions are difficult to get in good schools. If you are from IIT, IIIT etc or have presented papers at under-grad level or did some research work in under-grad level (which most of us wouldn't have), chances are that you will get an RA position easily if you find the right professor who is working in the same field as you earlier did.

Next, we have on-campus jobs. These jobs are usually paid on hourly basis. They usually pay anywhere between 7-15 dollars an hour. It depends on the kind of job and the school. Examples of these jobs: (Some GA jobs are also similar)
1) Work in school cafeteria.
2) Work in library
3) Monitoring the laboratories
4) Tutoring under-grad students
5) Front desk jobs: International office, Graduate Office, Bursar Office etc
6) Work in school's gym etc
7) Referee in school games
You get the idea right?

Finally, we have off-campus jobs. These jobs are illegal. You cannot do these by law and if you do, you need to have permission from the USCIS. These jobs pay very little 5-10 dollars an hour and are rarely enough. But most people do it anyway. If you are studying near a city, its very easy to get an off-campus job. You will know how. I should not say all these things here. I could get arrested for that. Anyway, you can ask your school seniors about these jobs. For these jobs, there is no hour limit as you are not working legally. If you are caught, you will be deported.

Also know that all calls/emails/chats can be monitored by the NSA. Never talk about murders/terrorism/hatred etc in any means of communication. Though in most of the cases, there is no harm, just don't do it. Its no fun either. Check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Security_Agency

So, you know about the different jobs you could do. Post comments if you have any questions and I will try to answer them. Don't im/mail me. If you ask here, others can profit from it too.

Good luck and God Speed!

Best Peaceful Telugu Movies

There have been numerous occasions when I wanted to watch a nice Telugu movie while having dinner/lunch or for passing the time. I know Hinduism upto a certain extent and know a little about Christianity.

I am not sure if the things I say here really exist in Hinduism.
So, just think it this way: This is just my theory. I do not care if you believe what I say or not, but if you do believe, then I am glad I passed on some wisdom(?).

The purpose of life is definitely not about having a nice job, being famous, having a beautiful wife/girl friend (boyfriends/husband for women), or having a beautiful family, or having a great personality. These are some of the most important things many people take pride for and pride is one of the most dangerous things in life.

Anyway, the purpose of life is to attain God. It is to seek God.
Ok. Now, as I am typing in this post, I am losing faith in my own beliefs.

Before I say any further, I need to make some clarifications about a Brahmin.
Brahmins are high priests in Hinduism. All its temple priests are Brahmin. All the rituals of a man’s life and even of the after-life can be carried out only by the Brahmin. The Brahmin is the god on the earth Bhoodevata. (Reference: http://www.sulekha.com/groups/postdisplay.aspx?cid=1051&forumid=1256078 I know its a bad reference) Brahmins had high respects in the days of the kings. As such, Brahmins developed some pride in themselves and encouraged acts such as intouchability etc and considered themselves to be at a high position. (Its ok if you are at top position but being proud of it is not). So naturally, people of other castes looked down on the Brahmins. The movies today show Brahmins to be at the bottom most level and make stupid jokes on them. Anyway, point here is that in Hinduism, Brahmins act as a go-between of the god and the human being.

In Upanishads, is a great saying: (Aham Brahmasmi), which means "I am Brahman":
In the sentence, ‘Aham Brahmasmi,’ or I am Brahman, the ‘I’ is that which is the One Witnessing Consciousness, standing apart form even the intellect, different from the ego-principle, and shining through every act of thinking, feeling, etc. This Witness-Consciousness, being the same in all, is universal, and cannot be distinguished from Brahman, which is the Absolute. Hence the essential ‘I’ which is full, super-rational and resplendent, should be the same as Brahman. This is not the identification of the limited individual ‘I’ with Brahman, but it is the Universal Substratum of individuality that is asserted to be what it is. The copula ‘am’ does not signify any empirical relation between two entities, but affirms the non-duality of essence. This dictum is from the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad.**
(http://www.jayarams.com/dharma/mahavakyas.html)
Again, I did not understand completely the above stuff. What I inferred is the following: I am God. In every being is God. To seek God, come out of your consciousness and look at yourself. (I have no clue how to do that)

Anyway, the purpose of life is to attain God. It is to seek God.

How do we do that? God can only be attained by coming out of consciousness. WE ARE GOD! The purpose of life is to know the true thyself! I am sure, that any religion will be based upon this core idea because any religion is just a way to reach GOD!

Most of us are not even sure what the religion is really about but still take pride in the religion we follow. Its like you owning a car and boasting about it but you cannot drive it. Most of us become old by the time we realize that and then we start to realize God by praying to Him, visiting His place (temples, holy places), giving charity and all the good stuff. Now, do acts like these attain Godness? I do not know.

There are people praying(?) (or seeking God) in Himalayas. There are people who have attained this Godness. Can you tell if they are "alive"? What happens after death?

What is life? What is death? Ideally, they must be both the same! What does any religion talk about people who are dead? All the religions want them to "rest in peace". What happens when you attain God? You are in peace with the world. Are life and death both the same? They may be! Maybe they are! Maybe being dead is no different. No one can tell.

You may ask me what about friends, family, relatives? Why do we feel sad when someone is dead? Why are we happy to see new life in the family? Why do people make babies and why people die? I don't know. (yet?) (or will never know?)....

How unfair is this?

Once upon a time, a hunter worshipped Lord Shiva unknowingly on Shivaratri. type='text'>Get going with your guitar

I play the guitar like a PROof beginners. Well, you could call me a beginner, but I call myself a PROof beginners.

Ok. I am kidding. I am a beginner guitarist. I love playing the guitar but I have stubborn fingers. They are short and one finger of mine accidentally fell in a door when I was 6 yrs old and the tip got cut. Only if these curses haven't been on me, I would have been another Satriani or Van Halen.

I have started playing the guitar back in December 2004 and still today I suck playing it. But still, I never got discouraged. I play for myself. I play for no one else. But if anyone like the torture of me playing, I don't mind torturing you. But then, there are times during which my fingers get blessed and produce some nice tunes and melody off the Guitar. I never let those memories die and immediately record those tunes using a stupid old mike which sucks but still does the job for me.

Click on the links below to download the mp3 files, if a window pops up asking whether to save or run, do either of those. If you choose to save, remember where you saved the file. If you choose to run it, there should be no problem unless you have a good mp3 player on your system. If you are running windows, it has media player which is good enough

Most of these songs I learnt from one of my favourite sites IGT. It was hot. 110F. I was sweating. The ISA(Indian Student Association) sent a member of their organization called Jinesh to pick me up. I waited for him for 15 mins but he didn't turn up. I roamed around the airport but still couldnt find anyone. I tried to call Tanay Shaha who is the president of ISA, but it went to his answering machine but still I left him a message saying that I am stuck at the airport.

Finally, I went to the taxi stand and asked the lady there how much it will cost from the airport to UTD, Richardson. She said it will cost about 30-40 Dollars. I got horrified. I waited for some more time. Then I asked her again if she was sure. When I was doing this, Jinesh came to me and asked me if I am Karthik. We introduced ourselves and he left to get his car. Finally we set to UTD. Me and Jinesh talked for sometime and mostly I asked him a lot of questions. He seemed to have got bored and turned on the radio. But still I asked him questions. Finally he showed me some buildings and said "UTD". I felt very happy for seeing those. It was a pleasant place. I was taken to the ISA's Office, which was Tanay Shaha's room. I expected ISA to have a building.

There was a lot of activity going on there. There were 175 Indians coming this fall and Tanay and Co. had to make pickups and temporary accommodations for all these people. His room was full of luggage of people who have come that week. There were a few people who were shifting to their temporary accommodations. I helped a few of them with their luggage. I came to UTD around 6PM and I was taken to my temporary accommodation with 3 other people who have come this fall: Syed, Srini and Sandeep.
They gave me some food. I ate. I slept thinking of all the great opportunities America was going to offer.

Well, So far I found nothing but that's a different matter altogether...

Don't Stare

We generally have a tendency to look or look for a long time(stare) at people who pass by us so that we can say a friendly hello to that person if we know him/her. Otherwise, that person will feel shy.

Americans, on the other hand, will just say a "Hi" or "Hello" or "How you doin" if you do the same to them. A few of them just raise their hand; a sign to say hi. Well, sometime I feel they are actually saying "stop" with this sign as if saying, "Stop staring at me".

My Journey to the USA

After i went in, they measured the weights of my bags which was a few hundred grams more than their specifications.. but they didnt make a fuss about it.. they didnt even asked me to open my bags.. after that, they checked in the big bags and allowed me to take the smaller ones... one bag pack and one small trolley bag.. after that, they checked my pockets.. i had a matchbox in my pocket.. he threw it away and i sat in the waiting area for 30 mins and finally boarded the plane.. they gave me the lassssssssssst seat in the plane an aisle seat.. and right before where the air hostesses make stuff(something like a kitchen).. the airhostesses were ok .. not tooo good.. one was a very old lady like in her 40's.. can you believe that? and there were 3 guys along with them... and the facilities for economy class were bad.. we had a 3 TVs for every compartment.. and each seat has a radio of 24 channels.. and they gave us head phones.. apart from that, there was nothing else for passing the time..

the flight arrived at frankfurt 10 mins before schedule.. i had to wait there for like 4 hrs where i passed the time by roaming around the airport.. there was a travellex counter where i exchanged 20 dollars for a few euros and a few dollars where he charged me 3$ for his service.. and i wasted 1.5 euros, which is about 100 rupees, for making a call to india for like 50 seconds.. then i found a telugu guy ravi bulusu who works in NJ and he bought me some donut and a coffee.. there is no sugar in the coffee and it was awful.. finally, it was time to board .. the schedule time was at 12:55 and it took off at 2:30 because of 13 idiots who were missing but obviously off for shoppng in the bigggggg airport.. this time, i got a seat in the middle of two guys, so I was obviously not happy again..

then, it landed at newark 1:15 hrs off schedule and everyone was not happy with it and they started clapping tho for the plane landed safely.. i guess thats just a formality to clap..

then, there was the immigration, where the officer asked me why i came to nj, whom i am going to stay with, my i20, how many days im gonna stay there and will i go to dallas at all.. after that, i collected my baggage and proceeded to the exit where my cousins and uncle were waiting and we took a few snaps near the parking lot and came home...
